The most beautiful places reinvested during Milan Design Week
MILAN DESIGN WEEK • Milano would not be Milano without its picturesque addresses and titanic monuments. Often nestled in popular neighbourhoods with old-fashioned charm, these popular or little-known places are transformed into reinvented jewels during each edition of the Fuorisalone.
An old disused slaughterhouse and rehabilitated pharmaceutical factory, a Milanese flat and wine bar, a historic palace, a mythical bathhouse and club… The emblematic and enigmatic addresses of the Lombardy capital have in turn been reinvested by designers to display their collections in exceptional settings.
Special mention should be made of the two itinerant concepts that should not be missed: Alcova and LABÒ, two design incubators that concentrate the new guard of contemporary creation within unusual spaces. GOODMOODS takes a look at the most beautiful re-appropriations in the streets of Milan.

In the heart of the 5VIE district, in an elegant 1930s residence housed in a historic Milanese palazzo, Artmest invited six international interior design studios to present their creative visions, each of which dialogues with and celebrates Italian craftsmanship. The lucky ones? Anne-Sophie Pailleret, Kingston Lafferty Design, MONMIIO Design, Nina Magon, Styled Habitat and T.ZED Architects. Their mission: to take back possession of the house by decorating it with pieces from Italian craftsmen, brands and artists who collaborate with Artemest.

L'église San Vittore par la Galerie Philia
Exhibition Desacralized by Philia Gallery at San Vittore Church
The Philia Gallery is housed in a desecrated former church in the centre of Milan. Built in the 11th century and closed to worship at the end of the 18th century, San Vittore e 40 Martiri has been used for a variety of community purposes, including as a basketball court, a playground and now as a contemporary design gallery. Called Desacralized, the exhibition celebrates the work of over 20 established and emerging international designers, each exploring the concept of desacralization through pristine white creations. The centrepiece? Cascades of Light, a monumental luminaire created by Morghen Studio that puts the chandelier in a new light.

La Casa Manzoni par La Manufacture

For the duration of Milan Design Week, Casa Manzoni, the historic palace where the famous Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni was born, will host contemporary furniture by La Manufacture. Reimagined with a modern bucolic fantasy, the Italian villa becomes the backdrop for new pieces by Sebastian Herkner, and collections by Nendo, Neri&Hu, Ana Moussinet, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, Patrick Norguet, Luca Nichetto, Front... A symphony between past and present, dream and reality.

Accustomed to taking over unusual places, Alcova, the itinerant platform for free design, is settling down for its fifth edition in the old slaughterhouse of Porta Vittoria. The colossal space will host a total of 70 projects from different brands, designers and publishers in a variety of settings, including Laurids Gallée, forever studio, Agglomerati, Tom Fereday, Jochen Holz, Elisa Uberti... An extraordinary space in which to discover the new guard of design.

The baths, the beetle and the beauty of life beyond borders: this was the slogan that could be seen at the legendary Bagni Misteriosi during GUBI SALONE 2023. The Italian publisher set up around and inside the city's baths to showcase its new collections and timeless icons. It was also an opportunity to remind people that GamFratesi's Beetle chair will be ten years old in 2023. To mark the occasion, ten personalities from the world of fashion, art, architecture and music were invited to reinvent the piece in their own way.

Cristina Celestino has taken over the legendary Milano Bonacossa tennis club designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Muzio in 1923. For this singular project called Clay Court Club, she went off the beaten track and conquered the clay court, scattering references to the tennis court through fabrics and furniture from publishers (Besana, Billiani, Dedar, Atmosphera, Bilumen), all with a beautiful arbitration of prints and colours.

Casa Maveri par OMA & SolidNature

For its second participation in Design Week, SolidNature commissioned OMA to design an installation that explores the journey of natural stone from geological formation to finished product. Located in the 19th-century Casa Maveri, Beyond the Surface is divided into two sections: an underground sequence presenting the processes of stone formation, extraction and processing; and an open-air collection of stone furniture designed by guests. For example, the work of Sabine Marcelis, a long-time collaborator of SolidNature, can be seen on a table, stools and a bar made from six different types of travertine and connected by a glass surface, revealing what lies beneath.

The Milanese wine bar Palinurobar has again donned new clothes for Milan Design Week. During the Fuorisalone, it took on the name of the collection that is sacred to it: FLORA. Created a few months ago by the Franco-American designer Sophie Lou Jacobsen for the young New York brand In Common With, the collection is made up of retro-postmodern inspired lights created in blown glass using age-old Venetian techniques. An ode to nature and Italy.

La fondation Rodolfo Ferrari par LABÒ
LABÒ, Milan Design Week 2023
For the first time, LABÒ has opened its doors in the Barona district, at the Rodolfo Ferrari Foundation. A real laboratory for creative expression, this new centre dedicated to design and art research was created in the heart of a former pharmaceutical factory in the city. A unique place to discover the creations of 39 emerging and recognised designers, artists, companies and art galleries (AMCA OVAL, Matière Grise, Southway Studio, Kira). Pieces curated by Elsa Lemarignier, Francois Leblanc di Cicilia and Alisée Matta.
