La Fantaisie Café
“It is sweet at any age to be guided by fantasy” – Marcel Proust.
So make way for La Fantaisie! Housed in a two-storey Victorian building in the heart of Melbourne’s Abbotsford district, La Fantaisie is a neighbourhood café that is also a florist and event space. It’s impossible not to see it as a reinterpretation of the bistro: there, Wendy Bergman of the Bergman & Co studio has distilled the emblematic codes of European cafés, notably the emblematic Thonet chairs (or bistro chairs), but also the wooden and skai benches and the suspended brass bar.
Burnished concrete floors, beamed ceilings, tiled brick walls, a pink marble bar, ceramic sconces… Despite the array of rough materials, the décor is warm, soft and welcoming, and is guided by the preciousness and fragility of the floral arrangements.
