Best of PAD London 2023
After Paris comes London. The PAD London, a must-visit event for design and decorative arts in the UK, is the essential destination for collectors and interior specialists. To mark its 15th edition, around sixty galleries (Objects With Narratives, Philia, Kreo, Scene Ouverte, Ormond Editions) and interior architects (Achille Salvagni, Thierry Lemaire, Rose Uniacke) from Europe, North America, and Asia gathered under the tent in Berkeley Square to showcase their rare collections, consisting of creations just designed by established and emerging designers, vintage finds, or iconic pieces reissued…
From chic to playful, from minimalistic to sophisticated: all styles were on display! Let’s take a look back at the remarkable installations of PAD London 2023.
Objects With Narratives
Objects With Narratives has a knack for discovering rare talents of its time. With its exhibition (UN-)CONTROLLED, the gallery shines a spotlight on two inseparable artisan-designers and friends, Mircea Anghel & Vladimir Slavov. Of Romanian and Bulgarian origins, these two self-taught individuals alternate between modern processes and ancestral craftsmanship to present primitive creations that resemble treasures from the Bronze Age.
Galerie kreo
True to its role as a 'research laboratory' dedicated to contemporary design, Galerie kreo once again presented a selection of pieces infused with humor and whimsy. Playful and unexpected creations, such as a feather mirror (Drop) by Olivier Gagnère or a Murano vase (Pinkoz) with zoomorphic forms by Jaime Hayon, along with other works by Marc Newson, Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby, Guillaume Bardet, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Pierre Charpin, Doshi Levien, Jean-Baptiste Fastrez, Front, Konstantin Grcic, Hella Jongerius…
Rose Uniacke
The gallerist, antique dealer, designer, and interior architect Rose Uniacke set up shop in Berkeley Square, not far from her premises in Pimlico. She presented a selection of vintage and contemporary pieces: a French wicker sofa from the 1950s, teak and wicker chairs by Pierre Jeanneret, a Voysey panel, and an Art Nouveau Thonet side table. Among the recent creations were a large Emile Gallé globe chandelier, an Adolf Loos brass Dodekaeder pendant, and Uchiwa fan chandeliers. The backdrop featured the 'Bottle Green' shade from Rose Uniacke Paint's latest collection.
Achille Salvagni Atelier
After his reinterpretation of the famous Nelson Rockefeller apartment in New York, the Italian architect and designer immersed himself in the interiors of the American architect Bill Willis for his latest installation. Here, North African, Mediterranean, and Islamic influences take center stage, like the blue parchment and bronze console that pays homage to the famous Majorelle Garden in Marrakech.
Ormond Editions
Ormond Editions is the pleasant surprise of this year. With locations in New York, Geneva, and Zurich, the gallery is making its mark on the design scene with rich materials (brushed stainless steel, bronze, onyx, oak, ceramic) and an aesthetic that oscillates between monastic and sophisticated. Their creations, designed by both established designers (Michael Anastassiades, Christophe Delcourt) and emerging talents (Yoona Hur, Garnier & Linker, Valériane Lazard), reflect a constant attention to detail, a passion for artisan craftsmanship, and beautiful materials.
Thierry Lemaire
The cabinetmaker Thierry Lemaire has envisioned an immersive space that reflects his universe and his interiors, which are precious and refined, where raw materials and sensual forms come together. The latest pieces from the collection were presented in an installation with golden hues, such as the GIO sofa and armchair, the YABA coffee table, and the reissues of the BYRON chair in patinated bronze, the LEEBA mirror, and the BASTION wall lamp.
Galerie Philia
For the first time this year, Galerie Philia joined the celebration to present an organic and poetic installation exploring contrasts through new works by fourteen of its international designers and artists. Among the highlights are three creations by the Italian Pietro Franceschini, a marble candelabrum by the Mexican Andres Monnier, a table by Studiopepe, a chair by Rick Owens, and an oil painting by Nicolas de Staël.
