Age-old know-how • A monthly deciphering of the art and the way of doing things right, imagined by Plendi by Vinci Construction, a general contractor specialising in exceptional projects that juggle rare materials and unique know-how.

A lobby dominated by an arty wooden counter in the Brancusi-style. Graphic bas-reliefs that challenge the law of weightlessness. And then a living room by the fire paneled in dark, streaked woodwork. Far from shying away from the ostentatious, wood is more worked than ever: hollowed out, scratched, chiselled, engraved, and above all always finely worked in the projects of architects and designers. Among them? Humbert & Poyet, Studio Paradowski, Luca Guadagnino or Studio Lizée-Hugot transform utilitarian elements and surfaces into high quality pieces. Each time, the different types of wood form the main thread of singular decorations, real ornamental biases.

Arty shapes

Beefbar Athènes by Humbert & Poyet

On the walls as well as on the counters and cabinets, the wood seems to pass through the hands of the great sculptors of the XXᵉ century: Brancusi, Noguchi… Free and abstract forms crumble the lines of hyper ornamental bas-relief.

The wood is graphically detailed and fluted, evoking the sophisticated spirit of Art Deco. Perfect geometries and optical asymmetries sublimate the craftsman’s work and transform utilitarian elements into exceptional masterpieces.

Pieced, hollowed out, perforated… Cabinetmakers and sculptors plane wood in such a way as to create cavities to sift and filter light with varying intensity, to create a sumptuous play of light beams, or simply to design singular open-closed partitions.

When the woodwork passes through the hands of architect Kennedy Nolan, director Luca Guadagnino or the Lizée-Hugot studio, it is striated, pleated, worked according to the calico plissettato technique… In their perfect decorations, the storage elements and surfaces are panelled with vertical geometries revealing the multiple facets of the material.
