Delicious Seats

Marion Chatel-Chaix, culinary designer & founder of Studio Exquisite.

Exquisite, adjective: Great refinement, delicious.

Designers are straddling the lines of food and design. If sight directly influences the perception of taste, it is understandable that contemporary designers are inspired by food to seduce. In their pieces, especially their seating, they continually use its codes to appeal.

In her talk “Not everything is played out in the kitchen”, the culinary designer Marion Chatel-Chaix questions the food and imaginary links that contribute to the creation of a genuine culinary seduction. A keen observer of meals that titillate the five senses, she reveals the secrets behind the Madeleines de Proust that are now taking over design.

07.45: Breakfast in the oven

Armchair by Shinebysho

“Have you noticed that everything you eat has a shape? A bagel, a baguette, a square of chocolate, a slice of camembert, spaghetti, a hamburger with chips, a sausage, rolled up in a patty… One of the functions of shape is seduction” explains Marion Chatel-Chaix. The studios (Note Design, Rejo, MAISONJAUNE) have understood this and have appropriated the lines, but also the creamy colours of the pastries to concoct soft seats that seduce as much by their silhouette as by their comfort.

Clothes don’t make the man! A presentation can be perfect, but if the taste does not match the visual promise, it will not be memorable. In short: if beauty brings people in, it is the taste or comfort of an object that brings them back. Designers such as Joris Poggioli, Kwangho Lee and Studiotwentyseven combine the visual effects of Italian dishes such as spaghetti and cannelloni with cosy lines and materials that invite you to snuggle up.

Design has a special link with the imagination and childhood memories. If beauty and goodness attract, the mind associates them with emotions, an environment, a context. An emotional approach that Sarah Ellison Studio and Holloway Li master like chefs in imagining floating seats that recall the tantalising aesthetics of strawberry Charlotte cake.
