This Venetian palace could almost have plunged us into a fairy tale. The difference is that the interior designer Dorothée Meilichzon has managed to make this typical Palazzo an atypical place by mixing Venetian craftsmanship, Memphis style and ancient influences. She gives us the background to this daring hotel project, designed for the Experimental Group.

Welcome to the Il Palazzo Experimental
The origins of the Il Palazzo Experimental project in a few words :

Venetian craftsmanship revisited!

The colour palette of the project?

« Complicated to mention just a few shades, there must be about thirty colours between the marmorinos (a type of stucco typically Venetian) and the paintings. For the marmorinos, we had fun creating our own colours. The paintings are variations of Sikkens. »

An adjective to describe the atmosphere & mood of the Palazzo?

Colourful!

The materials used and particular techniques revisited for this project?

« Terrazzo, terrazzo Scarpa, marble, lacquer and marmorino… We have made a selection from the various Venetian craftsmanships ».

Your favourite word in Italian?

Bellissimo !

Your references for this project?

« The Venetian architects Andrea Palladio (1508-1580), Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) and Gae Aulenti (1927-2012), antiquity, the lagoon, the façades of Venice, the Memphis movement, symmetry … and so many others. I also immersed myself in the project by listening all day long to podcasts about Venice ».

A trip off the beaten track in Venice?

« I especially like the Lido and walking in Venice at night: it’s incredible there’s nobody left. For the anecdote, I got married in Venice, on that occasion I had the chance to visit many beautiful palaces. In my list of Venetian places to explore, there are also the gardens of the Fortuny factory. It’s right in front of the hotel on the island of La Giudecca ».
