From the space bar in the movie « Passengers » that pays homage to an iconic scene to the fifth season of « American Horror Story », which presents a Hotel Cortez as magnificent as it is malevolent, « The Shining », Stanley Kubrick’s loose adaptation of Stephen King’s book, has undeniably created an entire horror genre centered around hotels.
Today, the visual cues from the film step out of the screen and into reality. The colorful wallpaper and hexagonal carpet designed by David Hicks, the gaudy gold of the lounge bar and concierge desk, along with its sophisticated bellhop, the exaggerated volumes of the grand chandeliers in the entrance, the retro ceramics, and the vintage colors of the bathroom… The grandiose codes of American Art Deco style, combined with Kubrick’s unsettling elements, seem to haunt contemporary settings. Welcome to the Overlook Hotel.
