Barbie, the film by Greta Gerwig starring Margot Robbie (Barbie) and Ryan Gosling (Ken), set to be released on July 19, has sparked a true « Barbie frenzy. » The pink palette and retro-pop codes that are synonymous with the American doll are being reappropriated and reinvented in countless ways in the world of creation (even causing a shortage of pink paint at Rosco).

When interiors (Paradiso Ibiza, Viva La Vika, Museum of Ice Cream) and designer pieces (Moustache, Amber Dewaele, Harry Nuriev) are bathed in monochromatic bubblegum pink, the collections of designers (Loewe, Versace, Chanel, Moschino) draw inspiration from Barbie’s ultra-glamorous wardrobe, blurring the lines between reality and imagination. Welcome to Barbieland.

Mid-modernism dreams in pink at Warner’s

In 1974, Mattel launched the Barbie Townhouse inspired by Corbusier’s architecture. In 2023, the Hollywood Barbie Dreamhouse still dreams of being a modernist villa, reincarnating with a proudly kitsch twist, the midcentury decor of the Kaufmann House designed by Richard Neutra in Palm Springs.

Barbie fans will have the chance to stay in a life-sized dollhouse in July. To celebrate the release of the Warner Bros. film, Airbnb is re-listing the famous Malibu DreamHouse, freshly renovated for the occasion, and offering two one-night stays this summer.

The seaside and the 1960s in splendor

Tropicana Ibiza Hotel

The seaside and the 1950s/1960s era, which played a significant role in Barbie’s history, are influencing aesthetics. The California motel spirit can be found in both Hollywood sets and current European hotels (Paradiso, Cap d’Antibes Beach Hotel, Tropicana Ibiza).

Life in plastic, it’s fantastic!

Museum of Ice Cream, Chine

Plastics and glossy finishes, once considered cheap and outdated, are now being reinvented in ultra-glamorous versions, injecting a sense of humor into everyday life. Barbie’s comeback also brings back glitters, rhinestones, and iridescent effects that adorn both fashion and private interiors, adding a subtly bling-bling touch.

Barbie-inspired aesthetics in contemporary design

COPENHAGUE Table, Collectible Brussels 2023 © Trend Nomad

Just like TABLEAU, which conceived an installation inspired by the evolution of Barbie’s image over the years during Collectible 2023, contemporary design is shifting towards a quirky, sometimes even eccentric aesthetic, using candy pink as a liberating color in a creation that was once too stagnant.
