50 years after the first step on the moon, the Space Age – an ephemeral trend of the late sixties – is more present than ever in the creative sphere. Its utopian aspirations are now propelling some haute-couture fashion shows into another galaxy. Oval shapes, bouncy structures and mercurial colors inspire designers. A retro-futuristic aesthetic that breaks with the present.

Fifty years ago, the whole world had its eyes glued to (cubic) televisions to follow the adventures of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon. Numerous tributes have punctuated the 2019 lunar calendar and influenced creative people. A cosmic adventure that never ceases to inspire!
The Grand Palais has taken on the appearance of a space shuttle in recent seasons: with the fall-winter 2017/2018 Chanel Ground Control parade – during which Karl Lagerfeld launched a rocket under the nave – or during the Mooon evening, a cosmic night that closed the « Moon » exhibition.
For the 50th anniversary celebrations of the moon landing, NASA has restored the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Florida.
The Pierre Cardin woman is definitely « galactic » and has forged the cosmic imagination of the sixties with her strikingly colorful silhouette. The visionary couturier is marked by the fervour of the American moon landing which influenced his show « Space Age and Futurism » in 1969. Resolutely modern, the last fashion show was a testimony to this heritage.
The Courrèges house has also constantly been inspired by this utopian aesthetic. As a tribute to this heritage, the 2019-2020 fashion show took place at the headquarters of the French Communist Party, imagined by Oscar Niemeyer, and was a nod to the 1964 « The Moon Girl » collection.
The resolutely futuristic flying saucer structure of the Niteroi Museum of Contemporary Art in Rio de Janeiro was designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer as a UFO in the Brazilian landscape. An iconic showcase – for Louis Vuitton’s 2017 Cruise collection – where colorful, futuristic silhouettes paraded down the cliffside. An inspiration that also transpired in Virgil Abloh’s first fashion show for the house last year.

Joe Colombo – master of the Space Age – inspired designers years later with his futuristic and technological interiors governed by a constant concern for functionality. His aesthetics can be found in the collaboration between Gufram and Atelier Biagetti or in the sound capsules of the Framery brand.
While the iconic room of « 2001, the Space Odyssey » was recreated for the 50th anniversary of Stanley Kubrick’s film in Washington, Dimore Studio is inspired by this same futuristic universe with its scenography « Interstellar » presented at the Furiosalone in Milan in spring.
