Functional distractions

© Grégoire Couvert

The jury’s special mention at the 16th Hyères International Design Festival goes to… Steven Coëffic for his « functional distractions »: nine singular objects which, each in their own way, reveal playful and unusual uses.

From his studio in Belleville, the Frenchman diverts everyday objects and uses them to transform them into curiosities. For example, a magnetised puck must be placed in a secret spot to open a safe; a table lamp must be tilted to the side to light up; another becomes a wall lamp when its head is turned 360°. Each automation becomes an entertainment and creates an intimate bond with the user.

These creations, as regressive in their forms as in their functions, are made more complex by a sensitive and precious material library: earthenware, glass, mahogany… Demonstration.
